Victory day is national holiday in Bangladesh celebrated on 16 December to commemorate the victory of the Bangladesh forces over the Pakistani forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. The Commanding officer of the Pakistani Forces General AAK Niazi surrendered with his forces to the allied forces of Bangladesh, which marked the end of the 9 month Bangladesh Liberation War and 1971 Bangladesh genocide and official secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh. Bangladesh has marked 50 years of victory over Pakistan in a bloody war for independence by hosting a military parade with the Indian president as a guest of honour. Huge crowds paid tribute to Bangladesh's war heroes in the capital Dhaka and other cities on Thursday. Programs in Dhaka The programs marking Victory Day will also include a 31-gun salute, placing of wreaths at the monuments to pay homage to martyrs, hoisting of the national flag atop all government, semi-government and private offices as well as offices of autonomous bodies across the country.
